Protein enrichment by foam Fractionation: Experiment and modeling

Protein flotation is a process in which protein molecules are enriched by adsorption at rising bubbles. The bubbles then form foam above the solution, where liquid drains down and dried foam, concentrated protein, extracted. Here, recovery rate purity of extract depend on stability, surface coverage, bubble size, gas flow rate, etc. In this work, we performed experiments using bovine serum albumin (BSA). addition, an unsteady state simulation was carried out numerically solving drainage equation foam. Thereby, extracted volume concentration outlet were calculated with time. Required quantities such as interface coverage or size distribution measured corresponding fed into model. showed that coalescence accelerates leading to dryer higher enrichment. modeling also reproduced tests within reasonable error range. solely relies experimental inputs does not require any tuning parameters. It can be further used for optimization up-scaling flotation.
